for Luke

Filed under: Food — laurenwenker @ 8:30 am

Luke recently became a fan of Nutella. Unaware that there is a day dedicated to the spread, I missed it! World Nutella Day 2009 was this past Thursday. On that day people make a recipe with it. Even though I missed it, I found a site that has interesting ways to eat it as well as recipes to try. Check it out!

Josh’s birthday week in progress

Filed under: Food — laurenwenker @ 8:43 pm

I am behind on posting… I have a ton of pictures to post and I will hopefully get to them next week.

I love to celebrate birthdays. Josh’s celebration began over the weekend. We took a long weekend trip to Bari, Italy (pictures and details next week). We have eaten at one of our favorite restaurants, Arbustum House. Tonight I made his first cake and he opened some gifts. More eating to follow in the week! His gifts so far are a set of limoncello glasses and a wine stopper…both of which he has already put to use!

Vino!

Filed under: Food — laurenwenker @ 9:01 pm

I tried a new wine this evening. I liked it very much… so much that I did a bit of research to find it. The white wine is not sold down here in Southern Italy. It came from Northern Italy— the region of Piedmont. Low and behold, you can have it shipped from distributors in the States. Funny, I am in Italy and can’t get it, but you can! I thought I would share the info for any wine enthusiasts who might be interested.

Gavi di Gavi, Villa Sparina – 2007   wine1

The dry wine is soft and fruity, with apple, cream and honey character. Medium-bodied, with bright, citrusy acidity. Medium finish, with lemon skin and straw flavors. The grape is a white variety grown throughout much of Italy, but most widely known for the lovely wines it produces in Piedmont’s Gavi DOCG.

The 750 ml. bottle can cost up to $30. I found it on sale for $16 at this website: http://winelibrary.com/reviewwine.asp?item=42209

I also found it for $18 at this website: http://www.samswine.com/Villa%20Sparina%20Gavi%20di%20Gavi%202007/10073915,default,pd.html?cgid=WINE&utm_source=Vinquire&utm_medium=WineFeed&utm_term=winebottle&utm_campaign=base

Another tip— any wine store will usually special order requests for you if you order several bottles.

White Chip Brownie Cookies

Filed under: Food — laurenwenker @ 1:36 pm

A couple requests have been made for my brownie cookies. This is a super easy recipe. They are a bit rich, so have a glass of milk standing by!

Ingredients:

1 bag (12 oz.) semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 bag (12 oz.) white chocolate chips

6 Tbsp. (3/4 stick) unsalted butter

3 eggs

1 cup sugar

1/3 cup all purpose flour

1/2 Tsp. baking powder

In a microwave-safe bowl, heat semi-sweet chips and butter for 2 minutes. Stir with spatula and heat for another 2 minutes. Stir until smooth. Set aside.

In a large bowl with electric mixer, beat eggs and sugar until thick. Mix in the chocolate mixture. Mix in baking powder and then flour. With a spatula, gently stir in the white chips.

Using a sheet of plastic wrap, form dough in to a log (you will make 2 of these). The dough will be very soft, so use the plastic wrap to hold in a log shape. Wrap it tightly. Put in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or until firm.

Preheat the oven to 375. Unwrap dough. With a sharp knife cut into slices (I kind of mold my slices into a circle). Place slices apart on parchment-lined cookie sheet (or a greased sheet). Bake 13 to 15 minutes. A shiny crust will form on top and the center will still be gooey looking. Cool cookies on a rack.

Last night Josh and I celebrated our expected arrival by having a nice dinner. Josh cooked the meal from scratch! I have the best hubby ever!! The baby and I were very pleased to have eaten an egg, broccoli, goat cheese and bacon frittata along with a yummy salad.

We hope that everyone had a nice day of celebration!!

For those who don’t know, I like to get real with some fries and a McFlurry every now and then.

Also, here is a link to Lindsey’s facebook album where you can see pics from her trip to London too!
